Through guiding many years of mending and sewing courses I have come to believe that these circles are first a space to remember. We have been lead into forced forgetting to allow us to keep mindlessly consuming. So, while you may have never held a sewing needle in your hand I believe there is a piece of you that knows how to work with this tool to create acts of care and I would like to sit next to you to remember. I invite you to come and sit on the floor, bring something soft in need of repair and stitch in a circle together.

While this is a mending workshop that will include technical hand sewing demonstrations it will also be a time to intimately connect with our garments and each other through the act of stitching.

DETAILS: A great way to breathe new life into garments which have been set aside because of stains, holes, age, etc. This workshop will provide participants with methods of visibly patching textile remnants onto pre-worn garments using hand sewing.  Participants should plan to provide a garment or soft item they wish to visibly mend with patches.  Hand sewing needles, thread and a selection of textile remnants will be provided.  However, participants are welcome to bring their own textiles for creating patches as well as any hand sewing supplies they wish.

Artist and instructor Hadley Clark will demonstrate how she approaches mending onto existing garments in her own studio practice, and will provide participants with creative direction and functional instruction. Ongoing discussions and demos will include simple hand sewing methods, how to first assess a repair, and highlight mending as an act of empathy.
